First, let me add my voice to those who have offered praise for the work of
the folks at the Dr. Loomis Memorial Trial Gardens in CO. Their efforts
represent an invaluable resource of impartial and thoroughly researched
information on performance of iris cultivars under practical gardening
conditions, especially for those of us growing iris in the Rocky Mountain
region. The only thing that could make it better would be for more
hybridizers to participate in the Loomis Garden program.
Linda Mann has declined the offer to establish her own test garden on the
grounds that she lacks the energy, time and space. Fair enough, but there
is a point to be made, and it is that EVERY IRIS GARDEN SHOUILD BE A TEST
GARDEN, in the sense that we should all make simple, but systematic,
observations on the iris we grow and share that information with fellow
irisarians.
