Welcome, Jeff! Your soil situation sounds perfect to me (okay, except for the
Botrytis and bacterial soft rot, neither of which is a big problem here). I
get envious of people who can actually dig their soil; mine is basically
adobe, underlain with caliche. Anybody have some dynamite handy?
Barb, in Santa Fe, where the soil is like rock, but we don't get floods,
earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, or tsunamis. Perfect!

To Dennis Stoneburner in VA:
Thanks for your warm welcome from cold Roanoke (and confirmation that I am
both sending and receiving).
We are in the midst of our 4th snowstorm this week, but then our standard
issue license plates proclaim "Greatest Snow on Earth!" - it is great for
the iris, too - makes the best "mulch" for keeping them cosy during the
winter and the meltwater is our source of irrigation to keep them from
drying out and blowing away during our arid summers.
