In a message dated 97-01-26 23:38:21 EST, you write:
<< I remain interested in the gap between hookeri and tridentata - what is
the explanation for this separation and are there many other species
pairs that have similar distributions. Most of my biogeographical
research was in oceanography and I do not know the plant literature.
Does anyone on the list have suggestions.
That's all for a week. >>
Phil Ogilvie, who lives in Washington DC, is very interested in the type of
issue you raise. Phil, who is a scientist by education, and a brilliant man,
gave a splendid presentation on the Hexagonae species, including geographical
distribution and why, at the St Louis Species Iris Symposium---I believe
many of Phil's ideas are going to cause taxonomists to go back to the drawing
board re the Hexagonae. An exchange of correspondence on the "setosa" issues
between Ian and Phil could only produce good things.
Clarence Mahan in VA, who did not mean to rile Bill Shear by the admittedly
"catty" dig at taxonomists (whom I love and respect!) and who apologizes with
great humility.
