I've seen this, also.  I don't do anything about it, however. I don't think
it turns brown, but also doesn't seem to hurt anything.  It seems to me
that if you want to, you could clean it off, which you will certainly do
when it warms up enough to get out there.  I think it is leaves rotting, 
but doesn't hurt the rhizomes here in Buffalo, New York where everything
is covered in ice.
