Re: What's Blue?

:I got my RHS colour swatches -- only thing I was disappointed in was I
:expected perhaps for them to have *names* along with the numbers -- like
:cerulean, or whatever....<snip> One person's "turquoise" is another's
:"aqua" and I accept that, but saying "92D" is not descriptive to those
:without the swatches.

Alas, I think one can't really have it both ways. Color "common names" are
like plant "common names"--doomed to be applied differently by different
people. A few years ago, I finally admitted defeat regarding using English
words to describe color precisely. I don't have a set of color swatches, so
when I write descriptions I don't even attempt to be more precise than
"dark red-violet" or "pale blue". "Cerulean", "azure", "aqua", etc., I
leave to the poets and interior decorators.

Happy irising, Tom.
