RHS Color Charts

Celia Storey asked:

: What are RHS color swatches

A set of 202 cards, each of which bears four shades of a single color. The
advantage: precision of communication when describing a color to someone at a
distance.

For example, if I tell you that a flower is "dusty rose", you can imagine
something that's somewhere between a greyed rose and a rosy tan. But if I tell
you it is "between RHS 186C & D" you can look at card #186 and immediately see
its color.

Two disadvantages immediately come to mind. The first is that the colors don't
match perfectly -- you often have to say "near", "darker than", "bluer than",
etc. -- and not everyone has a set.

: and where and why does one acquire a set?

I think they're still available through the AIS publications chairman. As to
the why of it ... They are mostly for hybridizers and other fanatics who want
to check their acquisitions against precise registered descriptions.
