The Historic Iris Preservation Society has a three step process for
finding/obtaining a desired older cultivar. This process is available to
non HIPS members on a "If time and resources permit' basis so isn't a sure
thing but usually works. (After all, the name of the game is really to get
iris and iris people together, HIPS or not)
1. Write: Commercial Source Chairman
Cameron Hall
308 St. Andrews St.
Petersburg, VA 23803
and request if any commercial source/catalog suppliers offer for sale the
iris that you are seeking. If the iris you want is not 'in commerce' the
next step is:
2. Write: DataBank Chairman
Joan Wood
975 Ironmine Rd.
Felton, DE 19943
and request the name and address of the closest private individual growing
the iris cultivar that you wish to obtain. IF it is being grown by an
individual who has listed their historic holdings with the HIPS databank,
you can contact that person and arrange for a swap, free-to-a-good-home
plus postage or any arrangement you can work out to obtain the object of
your desire. If no one is listed as growing the iris you seek, the court of
last resort is:
3. write/call or email ROOTS 'Locator'
%Current ROOTS Editor
Somewhere, Someplace
and request that the cultivar/cultivars you seek be advertised in the
'Locator' column. The is no charge for any of this process.
The editors for the Spring '97 ROOTS are:
Anne and Mike Lowe
12219 Zilles Rd.
Blackstone, VA 23824-9394
voice: 804-265-8198
fax: same, call first (I turn the modem on!)
email: mikelowe@tricities.net
I am considering running an 'Iris Wanted' page on the HIPS web site. I
don't want to cut the ground from under ROOTS, however I believe that only
a small percentage of HIPS members are online. [Surprisingly, there are
more HIPS members online than any other special interest iris group. I
would venture the opinion that an interest in Historics cuts across all
iris types. {LISTEN UP, NEXT ROOTS EDITORS!!!}]
