Well, umm, yes. I can help you out there!

There are several ways to go about this. One can trade with members of the
local iris society who are growing historic cultivars. One can mooch/trade
with the public. One can buy historic cultivars from your local society's
sale, or one can order them from any of the fine Commercial Sources which
offer a selection for sale. The last has a lot to recommend it.

As it happens I am the person charged by the Historic Iris Preservation
Society with the duty of keeping up with what is available for purchase where
and helping folks find their heart's delight. At this time I am in the process
of drawing up the current list of sources which will be published in the 1998
Issues of ROOTS, the HIPS Journal, and on the HIPS webpage. Other readily
acessible published resources are the catalogs in the Classifieds in the AIS
Bulletin, and those on the Iris-l page, but some of the information in both
lists is outdated.

There are numerous fine commercial sources who offer good starts of historic
cultivars and it is a good idea to shop with them as the chances of obtaining
an incorrectly named cultivar are thus diminished. Different sources stock
different cultivars, so often it is a matter of asking the Commercial Source
Chairman who is selling the iris you are seeking. I am that Chairman. If you
are looking for recommendations for a couple of respected catalogs, I can help
you out there as well. Drop me a note and let me know what you are looking for
and I'll see what I can do to point you in the right direction. I've got a
special little e-mail mailbox set up for just this sort of question:
HIPSource@aol.com.

Have you joined HIPS? Everyone should join HIPS. It is dirt cheap at five
bucks a year and you get the journal ROOTS and an opportunity also to also to
buy irises in the annual sale. Send your check to:

No, you don't have to be a member to get a HIPSource question answered,
although members' source questions take precedence in busy times and that
includes bloom season and ordering season.

So, let us know how we can help you get what you want. That's what we live
for.
