Our cold temperatures (at least this year), have only made it to around
17oF, but leaves have been knocked off the I. pallida per your description.
 Also, all but one of the old grandmother irises fit the category as well. 
Some which were planted in August also match the description and others are
more growthy, but I'm not sure they qualify as they haven't been planted
for a full year and thus gone thru the bloom season.  This is an
interesting theory and one which could be observed.  Like you, those which
bloom early in the season frequently get zapped by a freeze after they
shoot up the bloom stalks.
