SPEC: unguicularis

Greetings,

Sunday, Jan. 11, almost five months after I set it out, there is the first
teensy new growth on I. unguicularis Mary Barnard. The plant is alive! The
plant is growing!
I offer this news as encouragement to anyone who has tenderly arranged
special seating for a bit of this winter-bloomer only to watch the crispy
brown and green fans it came with linger in suspended animation for weeks
upon weeks upon improbable weeks. Walk away and let it be. So long as there
is any green on the leaves (and perhaps long after) your clump may still be
viable. Give unguicularis (un-quick-ularis) many months before you quit
believing.

Little Rock ... rainy and overcast, as usual. Yesterday there were four
inches of rainwater in the wheel well of the Ford. Now we know how that car
part acquired its name.
