The bloom stalk would be mighty unusual at this time of year. Mine definitely
bloom once a year in the spring with the columbines, and although the
beginnings of next year's growth are apparent just below the surface of the
soil, they are quite definitely leafless and dormant.

In any case, Bletilla striata is a nice plant, especially for those who enjoy
foliage effects in the garden. It is a terrestrial orchid that, according to
the RHS Index of Garden Plants, is hardy to USDA Zone 7. I got my first few
little rhizomes about five years ago and they have grown into a handsome
colony in a corner of the perennial border. I do nothing special for them
besides giving them whatever organic fertilizer and water the rest of the
border is getting, and they do not seem to be bothered by any pests or
diseases.
