I'm back. I got stir-crazy yesterday and spent the day away from our
house. Situation is much improved but many are still without power.
Dairy farmers have been asked to throw away truckloads as processors
could not handle the milk. Generators are still in high demand and
rural areas can expect to remain without power for a few weeks. =
Schools
remain closed Monday and Tuesday. Chance of freezing rain on Tuesday =
so
we're crossing our fingers.
On winter strategies, my bloom report after three freeze-thaws in the
spring
1. No blooms and no increase: Maria Tormena, Golden Ingot, Outrageous
Fortune
2. No bloom with reasonable increase: Sunray Reflection, Dazzling
Gold, Enchanting, Gay Parasol, Gyro, Freckled Sunshine, Sunrise
Promenade, Cayenne Pepper, Memphis Blues, Beverley Sills
3. Deformed plants (lower bud count, shorter stalks, deformed blooms):
Edith Wolford, Blenheim Royal, Cycles, Sapphire Hills, Syncopation, Sky
Hooks
4. Performed normally: Coral Beauty, Warror King, War Chief, Glass
Slippers, Kah-nee-ta, Peach Picotee, Brandy, Jubilee Trail, Can Can =
Red,
Footloose
The good performers generally bloomed mid to late season. The
performance of Coral Beauty and Footloose were surprising. Coral =
Beauty
has been an iffy performer for years and was in danger of being =
chucked.
One clump had five stalks and each stalk put out least 9 buds giving us
a bloom period of almost three weeks. Good increase too. Footloose is
a very early bloomer and it was only in its second year in the garden.
There was some rot and the mother rhizome had to be cut out but the
remainder of the plant came through unscathed.
Most medians did well. The exceptions were Voila (IB), Honey
Glazed=A0(IB), Consummation (MTB) and Pele (SDB). The Siberians, =
Japanese
and species were not affected.
