mulching

Here in central OK my TBs and SDBs still seem to be in a dormant stage. The
temps have been like a rollercoaster but mostly in the 40s for highs and 20s
for lows, with very little ice or snow. I would like to hear some thoughts on
mulching. I did see a narcissus breaking ground and a petunia in bloom. I read
that mulching wasn't good for irises. I am having trouble with heaving.
