mulching

Here in central OK the temps seem to be averaging in the 40s for highs and 30s
for lows. The irises still seem to be dormant but am having a problem with
heaving. I have read that it is not a good idea to mulch irises. Does anyone
have past experience with mulching and what to use. Where does one get iris
reference books? I do have a pretty purple petunia from last year blooming.
