Redbrd -- I'm feeling pretty sick myself: jonquils are 5" high, hyacinths
well over 1". Temperatures in DC are rollercoasting with occasional freezes
already and more promised. I ran out and bought shredded mulch and piled it
up on the poor misguided bulb plants until I couldn't see their heads any
more. This may be the old ostrich approach, but at least I feel better.
Regarding the TBs, I took advice offered several months ago and poured
course sand on top of the rhiz to hamper their heaves, then piled Christmas
tree boughs over the plants themselves (also part of the experienced voice
of the list) in the hope that spring rot would be hampered. Couldn't help
noticing as I did this (couple of days after Christmas) that many plants had
already sent up new increases. Now I've promised myself to look the other
way until mid-Feb at least and hope the poor things don't get whacked too
badly in the next month. We usually get our worst winter weather in
Jan-Feb, sometimes early March. If there is anything else I can do, I hope
a friendly soul will say so soon!
Merrily in DC, a zone of its own.
