OT-BIO Andrew Wheeler + questions

Hi everyone, I have finally got around to subscribing instead of depending
on others for the prints of the proceedings on the Iris-l... Anyway, My
name is Andrew Wheeler and I live in Colrain, Mass (when I am not here at
Bates in Lewiston, Maine) I grow about five hundred different varieties of
beardless iris as well as a few bearded. My collection is predominantly
species iris, siberian and japanese. I also do some hybridizing of sibs
and species.
I have an upcoming semester project in an economic botany class
and I thought it might be appropriate to do conduct a study involving
irises. One of my ideas was to attempt to convert Enfant Prodige (HUBER
93? 94?) to tetraploid in hopes of establishing fertility by treating the
meristem with either colchicine or oryzalin. I have been at a loss to
find a method with which to do this. I know that it has been done with
limited sucess, but I would like to try anyway. I also was wondering if
anyone knows about the use of any of these mutagens (or any others) on
iris. maleic hydrazide, methyl nitrosourea, sodium azide, azidoglycerol,
4-nitro-o-phenylenediamine. I realize that simply using a mutagen is no
substitute for hybridization, but I am interested to know what the result
might be. Thank you, Andrew Wheeler.
