Legally, writers retain copyright to everything they post on Iris-L or
elsewhere on the internet. Whether a particular use of such material (say
an excerpt in a newsletter) is deemed "fair use" or not is a legal question
involving a variety of factors. In practical terms, it is unlikely that
anyone could successful receive an award of monetary damages for
unauthorized duplication of the type of writing that appears on Iris-L.
However, the legal (and ethically) correct practice to obtain the writer's
permission before reproducing a piece of writing of any length.
Cheers, Tom.
