One of my best growing and most floriferous irises is I. setosa. It
grows in normal garden soil - loam - which was suplimented with old
mushroom manure. It is in a slightly protected but sunmny spot, well
drained and never floods. It was spectacular in its first year of
flowering. I do not normally fertilize any of my irises although I
might change this practice next year. Watering is only done in the very
dry periods and then about once a week.
I should note, in response to another question, my versicolor,
laevigata, ensata, pseudocorus and virginica all seem to be doing well
in similar conditions although the virginica seem to be a little small
and flowers in amongst the leaves. This latter character may be because
it was flowering for the first time. All the rest flower well.
Ian. in Ottawa where we consider ourselves in zone 4B but with the
present climate fluctuations, who knows!
