You've probably heard about the big storm that hit NC and VA yesterday and
last night. Here in central VA we got nearly 4" of rain, and the schools
closed at 1 PM due to rising creeks covering the rural roads. This morning
schools remained closed because the wet roads froze during the night,
making them dangerous for school buses (we didn't hear this on the radio
and showed up on time at 8:00--bummer!) West of here in the Appalachians
as much as four FEET of snow fell. With temperatures due to be in the
upper fifties today, melting will be swift and those of us downstream are
expecting flooding. Here at Farmville the Appomattox River is well out of
its banks already.
But enough of that! In my garden we have crocus, two hellebore species,
winter jasmine and a well-protected forsythia in bloom. The narcissus
'February Gold' is budded at 4-5" and will surely live up to its name this
year. Forced Iris reticulata are blooming (though none too well) on the
window sill, and a few are showing color outside.
I just couldn't consign my expensive bulbs of 'Katherine Hodgkin' to the
open and so potted them. Now I'm trying to get up the nerve to bring them
in. I hope that at least one of the three will bloom; I've been wanting to
see this plant for years. Check out the great color pic in Kohlein's book
and you'll want it too.
