In response to some off-list comments
[THANKS -- I like the feedback!] about
the feeling of coming into a class in the
middle of the semester....
No, you don't have to understand genetics
and probability statistics to have fun and
success in hybridizing. If you have lots
of space and decades to play, you can
grow seedlings by the tens of thousands
without putting together a single chart --
and some may prove to be award-winners.
This type of analysis is for those who want to
improve the odds. If the SOSTENIQUE x
TRIBE OF JUDAH assignment struck you
as child's play, you'll probably want to skip
this one. But if you missed last year's
discussions on the subject, here's a very
simple example to chart, one that's
tailor-made for "cheating". If you have the
book GARDEN IRISES, turn to the section
written by Orville Fay entitled "Success =
with Wide Crosses". It includes an =
account of how he used a combination
of out-crossing and line-breeding to
produce his tangerine-bearded whites.
1. Use Tom's codes to chart Snow Flurry
and New Snow [dominant white selfs], and =
Cherie and Pink Cameo [tangerine-bearded
pinks]. We haven't charted beard color
separately before, so just note that the
expression of color in the beard is not =
closely linked with the color of the falls.
2. Chart a cross between the two types and
predict what the F1 seedlings would like [what
ground color and what beard color].
Later, I'll post Fay's description of the
resultant seedlings and the next step
in the assignment.
