Hi Chris,
I planted 60 I. schachtii seeds green in Dec '99 (mid summer) because the
pod had rotted and the seeds were slimy, but firm. They had not dried out
and become brown yet. I have had 50% germination, with a couple just coming
up now. I grew them in a pot of well drained potting mix.
(I. schachtii is a dwarf bearded species.)
The point of stratifying seeds, or letting them sit through a cold winter,
is that they need cold, in order to break dormancy before they can
germinate. Green seeds have not become dormant, so they will germinate
fairly quickly, but are more susceptible to rotting if conditions are damp.
Whether your seeds germinate depends mainly on how mature they are. (how far
developed from pollination). How old was the pod?
Hope this helps, and I hope it sends, since I have tried already 3 times. My
computer is acting up.
Cheers, Jan Clark
