Re: Digest Number 1132

Susan,
People at a distance cannot tell you what zone you are in. In states like
California which are mountainous, so much depends on your elevation and your
relationship to air currents from the ocean. Even though there is a national
zone map which shows big stripes wiggling across the country that are roughly
parallel with latitude, everywhere there are micro-climates that can vary
within 5, 10, or 20 miles across several of these zones except in those great
flat zones that exist mostly in the middle of the country.
The best strategy for you is to ask your County Agent, visit with other
gardeners and ask them how they classify the area, and most important ask
what succeeds and what is vulnerable.
Does this help answer your question?

Jim
