Gloria: Welcome to the group. It is a very active one and if you have
been lurking for a while you know then that we have members, truly, from
around the world.
In answer to your question about planting - I would strongly suggest
that you allow the Schreiner order to sit and dry out for at least 7 -
10 days. Having heard of problems that people have experienced by
planting Schreiner iris immediately on receipt and also my own personal
experience has proven to me that it is best to wait at least 7 - 10 days
before you plant them. Most of the commercial growers here in Oregon do
a high degree of irrigation and so the rhizomes are "pumped" up with
water. It will do you well, especially in your growing area to let them
dry out. As for the order from Ray & Judy Keisling at After Hours, I can
give no other advice other than to compare rhizome size. Their rhizomes
"may" be appreciably smaller but since I have never ordered from them I
can not be certain.
With regard to the iris that you received with the shrub order, I see no
harm in replanting them in an area that gets at least 6 - 8 hours of
sunlight daily. If they haven't bloomed in 2 years - perhaps they were
not yet mature enough to bloom when received and when planted in an area
of low sunlight did not mature sufficiently.
When you plant your new iris from After Hours and Schreiner "do not"
fertilize them when you plant them. They have been fed sufficiently
before you received them and besides that you will in all probability be
planting then into "virgin" soil (where no iris have been grown before)
and there will be more than sufficient nutrients in the soil.
You will, no doubt, get other replies and I'm sort of curious as to what
they will be. I was born and raised on the east coast (N.Y. & N.J.)
before I retired and moved to Oregon 13 years ago so I have experience
in growing iris on both coasts.
Please understand that I am in no way disparaging the Schreiner product.
Their garden is a family enterprise and has been since 1925. I consider
them my friends and their stock is of the highest quality. I recommend
them to all my gardening friends with the one "rule" that you let their
stock dry out for at least a week.
If you have any additional questions and I you think that I may be able
to help please contact me.
Sincerely,
Dave Silverberg
