There's a good chapter on iris genetics in World of Irises, written by
Kenneth Kidd. Also a somewhat more obscure (due to bad translation) one by
Peter Werckmeister in the Koehlein iris book. It's not as simple as just
the presence of anthocyanin. Anthocyanins are actually a family of
pigments--adding various side groups to the main molecule changes the
color. An blue anthocyanin called delphinidin has been found in many blue
irises. Breeders for true blues are essentially trying to eliminate all
pigments but this one (or a comparable blue anthocyanin).
Does anyone know if Ken is still active in iris? He had a main interest in
arils and arilbreds, as I recall.
