Hello, Ruth!
Delightful to meet you! Welcome to the group.
<< I'm a new subscriber from Northern Massachusetts. Listed as a zone 5, I

My Early Girls are in full glory here in Richmond, Virginia (USDA Zone 7),
although I think they are coming down with blight. I started some more seeds.
Might get another batch to bear before frost.

Probably not. What you need for bearded irises is plenty of sun, superior
drainage, adequate water and not a whole lot of nitrogen. If you think that
area could use some amending, you can add compost, and maybe a handful of
lime or so if your dirt runs on the acid side. It would be a good time to get
a soil test done, too.
<<There is one lone iris that has snuck through the fence from my neighbors
yard in the bed.>>
It wants to be your iris, Ruth.
<< I am also preparing another bed by moving some peonies that are not happy
with a full sun and want to plant iris there from a bed that is getting way
too
much shade. Am I asking for trouble? >>
Not with the irises, if full sun is what you are worried about, but this is a
terrible time to move peonies. Please be sure you leave a lot of soil on the
roots and move them quickly and water them in very thoroughly.
Please ask anything you need to. We are are always happy to help!
