RE: OT:ALCOHOL AT CLUB FUNCTIONS

Patrick,

First, you would need to check your local laws about serving alcoholic
beverages.  Once that hurdle has been cleared, you would need to factor in
any liability that may occur.  Keep in mind that in today's legal climate,
no one is free from liability.  Look at your organization's insurance policy
and see exactly what they cover.  They may exempt themselves from this kind
of liability, in which case, and liability would fall on the club, and once
past the organization, the officers.

OK, having said that, I did belong to an organization that, at one time, did
allow alcoholic beverages.  However, they were not served by the club, but
purchased from the bar in the building, whose meeting room we rented.  It
did lead to a large attendance at meetings.  When we moved out of that site
to another site where there was no bar, or alcoholic beverages, attendance
was cut in half.  We may have simply been fortunate, but, we never suffered
any adverse effects from the drinking.

I am curious to find out everyone's feelings about having alcohol at club
functions.  I would like to hear from those not against alcohol in general.
Some have thought a pitcher of margaritas with a Mexican Food theme potluck
would be nice.  I am unsure about the liability.
