I know what you mean. Sometimes just framing the question points the way to
the answer.

<< The ground is rocky there and it is very hard to find enough dirt to cover
the roots let alone the rizhomes! I go rob dirt from the veggie garden just
to anchor the roots sometimes! They all do great here except the few at the
lower end of the new moon where it tapers off to the point. These grow and
show no signs of bugs, boreres, rot, or anything , they just dont bloom??? >>

You know, that is interesting. I've got a small bed that has patio on two
sides, lawn on one, and fence on the last. Down in the smaller part of the
right angle that pokes into the lawn and along that lawn side things never do
as well as they should. Sun is no problem. Some tree roots work their way
into the bed and have to be removed when Ireset the irises, but all things
considered adequate water is no problem since the bed gets watered when I
have to water the lawn. But it is true that down in that point, the irises
never do what they ought to. I wonder if we have limited the root run down in
our narrower bed places or something. I mean, my HONORABILE did puky there,
for heaven's sake. No answer for you, I know, but depending on how you have
the bed's perimeter demarked and how close those irises are to the edge, you
might think about trying something really proven and vigorous in that
position and see what happens. I'm going to move some of mine in away from
the perimeter more, I think.
