I've been a largely-lurking member of iris-talk for nearly three years
now. There are so many tremendously-knowledgeable folks on this list, I
rarely feel I have something worth posting - few areas where my experience
provides any "value-added," especially since I grow only thirty or so
different irises on a partly-shady property -- marginal conditions for bloom
or rebloom. Mostly I'm here to learn.
I've actually launched one thread on this list --asking about good orange
irises. That was fun; I've bought several of the recommended ones, and am
looking forward to next spring's "show". I was glad to be able to pass the
word to this wide an audience to help Dick Sparling's babies find new homes.
And I appreciate the response to the iris-ID questions I've asked. Good to
know the resources are there.
Most fun of all is to listen to the repartee between Anner, Bill, Jan,
Griff et al, whether or not I have something to add. I wish I had a chance
to meet more of the wonderful and quirky regulars here. I feel real warmth
for many I've come to know through this list, and it's been a genuine
pleasure on the few occasions I've had to match faces with the personalities
revealed through postings. I've especially enjoyed a dinner with Bill
Shearer when he came through town to speak, as well as my conversations with
Rosalie Figge about mice and irises (I raise Fancy English Show Mice as one
of my non-gardening hobbies; bet you didn't know that there are Bluepoint
Siamese longhaired mice, much less that there are shows for them.)
Once or twice when I *have* taken the trouble to post, I've wondered if my
mail ever went out to the rest of the list, or if I'd missed the point of
the thread, because there'd be no reaction to/incorporation of my message;
the usual players would continue to comment in their original direction
without any indication that my stone had thudded into the pond. I think the
latest time was a thread on bugs infesting a writer's irises, where I
suggested another type of bug that often hit on mine. I suppose that's more
polite than blasting me directly for "screwing up." Still, if I put out
incorrect info in my posts, or if my tone is improper, I'd like to
know/learn; the silence has made me think a third time rather than twice
before responding. Got some cheese to go with this whine <g>?
Back to the lurking corner, Igor!

Zone 6a, near DC - a hailstorm with half-inch lumps beat the tar out of my
garden last night -- sliced oriental lilies to slaw and pulped the rebloomer
stalk coming up on SILVER DIVIDENDS. But the newly planted stuff from this
weekend's sale looks OK...
