9. Get more questions off-list than on, so answer them that way.
As our membership has grown, the subject matter we cover has become more
general and less technical. This is neither all good nor all bad -- but
it's unquestionably different.
Some who have been around for a while may recall the "hybridizing classes"
I once held, complete with homework assignments posted on-list. Or the
chart of color genetics posted by Tom Tadfor-Little, which spawned a number
of interesting threads.
Some probably remember a rather spirited thread on the Punnett Square.
Theory -- its statistical foundation. Practice: how to construct and
interpret one. This tool is of intense interest to some hybridizers, little
to others [depending on the type of program] but every beginner needs to
know enough about it to decide whether to use it. Of course, it is of NO
interest whatsoever to the average gardener -- so I can't imagine holding
such a discussion on-list today.
I follow a very simple rule: if a question comes through Iris-Talk, I
answer on-list; if it comes privately, I answer privately.
But I'm still here.
