RE: CULT:animals

 Ruth,
I swear by a bitter fluid called RO-PEL, which can be sprayed on bulbs or
rhizones, then let dry before planting. My home is called "Squirrelheim"
for the number of the rascals on the lawn at closing (14!), and I would have
no tulips, crocus or lilies in my garden without this stuff.

Given that, irises are not attractive/edible to the critters you name -- as
you say they may be looking for worms or grubs in the disturbed soil (have
you had a problem with borer or grubs?) or, if you're using alfalfa pellets,
may like the taste of your soil amendment (I know my Labrador does!). RO-PEL
sprayed onto the soil will help that, better than I found red-pepper flakes,
a commonly-recommended remedy, to do. At one point, the squirrels were so
conditioned to finding tasty bulbs in peppered soil, all I had to do to get
a new section of earth nicely turned was to sprinkle it liberally with
red-pepper flakes - the squirrels would dig furiously whenever I was out of
the yard, probably on the principle "there's so much manure, there MUST be a
pony somewhere in here!"

Hope this helps...

Lynn

Zone 6a, partly sunny after a week of rain; still haven't figured out where
to put those last three sale rhz --; they're all bright yellow rebloomers
(HOORAY!) and I don't want them to compete side-by-side...
