Hi Ruth
If you can get the animals to leave them alone after the first year, you
probably won't have a problem once they're established plants. (That's my
experience, where I am.) If it's as bad as you suggest; and my first two
year's here they dug up almost everything as fast and often as I planted and
replanted; try puttimg some wire mesh over the bed for a few weeks. I
personally think the holes on chicken wire are too big for this and right now
I can't remember what that type of wire (it's not a screen which is too
small) is called but if you can prevent the animals from digging them out for
a month chances are they'll take. For bulbs and the like, you can use a wire
mesh that's relatively fine because in the fall you only need to get them in
early enough for the bulbs to sprout roots before the frost sends them into
dormancy. I would expect that if you're experiencing problems with rhizomes
and what not it should only take them a few weeks to start putting up fans
and you could either switch to a larger gauge or tent them as wire tends to
be quite malleable. Hope this helps. My other off the cuff suggestion would
be to get a Sheltie. They are very territorial and I no longer have squirrel
problems, birds aren't even allowed in his yard. Good luck Donna
