Howdy everyone,
I don't know how many regions or local clubs have a summer/fall rhizome auction, but if you do, I have an Excel spreadsheet which may be of help to you. Region 14 always has a summer auction of newer introductions, and the process goes rather quickly making it nearly impossible for one person to manually record, tally, and extend totals for all of the attending bidders. We usually have two persons handling the job...one recording the sales (amounts and bidder numbers), the second posting to spreadsheets so that we'll have an accumulated total by bidder by the end of the day. And if you're one of those two people and you also want to bid on iris, well.. you have to be a circus juggler to qualify.
This year I've decided to take my laptop computer. I have prepared an Excel spreadsheet which will allows us to quickly record our sales, and the spreadsheet will automatically do ALL of the calculated extensions and accumulated totals for all bidders. I've tested it in a test sale scenerio, and it goes so fast that I don't know why I didn't think of doing it before. So I wanted to offer this Excel spreadsheet design to any one else connected to a rhizome auction who might feel that it would help.
The design is simple.... it has three colums in which you enter data: 1) the variety name, 2) the final bid amount, and 3) the bidder number. If you have multiple rhizomes of a variety, or a bidder purchases more than one rhizome of a variety, you simply enter the variety multiple times, to cover the total number of rhizomes sold. I use the mouse to simply highlight a cell, and then drag it down to make the additional copies. The neat part about the spreadsheet is that I have placed formulas in the remaining columns so that it automatically does all the other calculations. At the time the bidder wishes to obtain their total for their purchases, I use Excel's Auto-Sum feature to obtain a quick total. No need for a adding machine or calculator. The total is instant and accurate.
I don't know if anyone else has come up with something similar, but in any case, if any of you are interested in this spreadsheet, please send me a note offline and I'll be glad to email it to you.
