May I trim them, please?

As a brand new member of the group, I am devouring all the
information available here -- as I have many questions.

We are fairly new owners of a lovely older home in San Jose,
California (zone 9, I believe). It's a sweeping corner lot that
turns into a magnificent vista of color during April/May when all nine
beds of bearded iris are in bloom. Really, it's incredible! The
original homeowner was here for over 40 years and put a lot of work
into all this (last count was 37 different kinds & colors!) and I
feel a definite responsibility to carry on the heritage. I love them!

My problem? By this time of year (July), all the beds look haggard
and lack-luster.....sort of like used-up cornfields after harvest.
The foliage becomes a lighter green, some with brownish edges, and
most of the tips turn brown and kind of keel over (the top 3"-4").
My husband wants to "go out there and just trim everything down"
but, so far, I've kept him from doing that until I can get some
answers from "those in the know"! Can I trim the iris back? so the
beds look neater and cleaner? Ideas on how to make them look better
during the summer months when not in bloom? Thx for your help!

~Ellen~
