SHOW: Do I have a grooming problem?

Because of the early season this year, there weren't too
many good stalks to take to the shows. I brought some just
for color - I knew that they weren't going to get blues,
but they had a nice fresh terminal flower open.
Several stalks had the second terminal bud as the only
flower left - the side branches were bare. I carefully
removed the side branches. These stalks received no award
at all from the judges.
Is there a proper way to groom stalks with only one
flower remaining? Should the spent side branches be left
on? Or would that cause a loss of points because no
grooming was done? Are these doomed to forever receive no
award, no matter how straight the stalk and nice the
flower?
