My husband wants to "go out there and just trim everything down"

answers from "those in the know"! Can I trim the iris back? so the
beds look neater and cleaner? Ideas on how to make them look better
during the summer months when not in bloom? Thx for your help!

Hi neighbor.

Some parts of SJ are zone 8 and others 9. You are within a couple of miles of
the original Maryotts location. We are a little further away at
Hillsdale-Capitol expressway. About 95% of our iris are get less than an hour
of direct sun.

This time of year we clean the withered blades on the outside of the fans but
do very little trimming. I don't know how deep your rhizomes are planted but
if they are showing above ground they could cook in the hot direct sun.

Your heavy clay soil doesn't require a lot of watering for Tall Bearded iris.
about 4-7 days depending.

Some iris bloom early ( February-March), others July-August and some later
yet so don't give up yet. You should have some rebloomers which can rebloom
October through February!

Please do not add ANY nitrogen to the soil to green them up. Our fertile
Santa Clara valley has plenty already.
