There have been many times when we have been in a pinch to get enough
quality stalks on the bench, but with a few tricks, you can freshen some
things up.
If you have no side buds left, on a sib or JI, often twisting the
remaining ovary will snap it out of the spathe leaving the judges to wonder
if there actually is a bud in it. Often, you get the benefit of the doubt.
This is harder with bearded iris because the papery spathes are less
convincing, but it works some.
Don't every groom branches off because it totally destroys the balance
of the stalk and is more of an eye-catching fault than empty spathes. I
have seen this done with seedlings and it is especially toublesome then,
since a judge would be at a loss to tell how many buds that branch had and
what it looked like.
