Janet & Shan,

We're having the same high heat and no rain here again. As I remember, 
growing conditions are pretty much the same here as in Billings. Even with 
the best intentions, some things always need to be planted after it heats 
up and dries out.

I've tried the "pot 'em up" idea and managed only to make extra work for 
myself while winding up with cooked roots anyway so now take a different 
tack with those pots.

I plant whenever it's cool enough to be outside for very long, water things 
in well, then put the upside-down pots *over* the plants to give them 
protection from the sun. Pots are left on anywhere from 4 days to a week 
(so the plants can get a jump on growing new roots), then removed for  an 
increasing number of hours every day till the plants have had a chance to 
adjust. Works even with the most temperamental things.
