One solution to the problem of high summer heat is to pot youririses in
one gallon pots and put them in a shadier place until they get started.
It is a lot easier to control the amount of water they get and you can
use a better soil mix that will hold water longer. Come the cooler fall
weather, the plants will already have a good start on root growth and
you can just pop them out of the pots and plop them into the ground.

When I pot, I do it at a table so I am not bent over at ground level
spreading out the roots. Much easier on the back and knees. When it is
time to put them into the ground, one scoop with a shovel makes a hole
and in they go. Much easier.

Just my style. I do this even here in California iris heaven where the
temps rarely get above 90 and mostly stay around 75-80.
