Nor, are all color catalogs 'picture perfect.' And, I know that you made no
reference to that. I am just expanding the thread.
There doesn't appear to be a perfect system of conveying iris images
in words or in pictures.
It used to be that wordsmithing was one of the main ways to get one
interested in a flower, but, now, it seems everyone wants color
images and no fancy words. (On stage with three open, Miss Demeanor
takes a bow in her gown of puce burlap, neatly cinched with velvet,
resembling Scarlett in her drapery frock, etc).
But how accurate are these color images? How much 'doctoring' or
'airbrushing' goes on? Some call it 'adjusting.' At times I have
been shocked and very disappointed when I compared a catalog picture
to the bloom in my garden. And, I really don't think I have the type
of soil that changes flower colors that much. The bloom hardly
resembles the catalog pictures. I know that some colors don't
transfer to print very well, too, and I try to take that into
consideration. LADY FRIEND would have never sold if people relied
solely on the catalog pictures. She just never photographed all that
well for the catalog photographers, or her color couldn't be captured
in print. I don't know. She always looked bad in any catalog, no
matter whose, but we all know how pretty she really is.
Some color catalogs have pictures that are so blurry or off color, I
doubt that I would place an order. Others are fairly consistent with
accuracy of color.
A picture is worth a thousand words. (But, does it show branching,
bud count, increase, leaf spot, etc.?)
Maybe, these digital cameras will bring us the perfect pictures we
are looking for.
