Depending on the type & density of weeds, climate, location, landscape
context etc etc, some of the benficial effect of weeds on leaf spot may
be due to insect predators controlling disease vectors (e.g., preventing
aphids carrying disease spores from leaf to leaf).  Irises growing
buried in dense, unmowed fescue sod here sometimes appear disease free
in contrast to those in the open.  Of course, they don't bloom very well
in those conditions!
