Re: Seed Development

Hello all,

The study of pollen and spores is part of the science of polynology. In my amateur hybridizing efforts make sure that all 3 stigmatic lips receive pollen from the hoped for successful cross. Pollen collected directly from the anthers is in a stage of development. If the pollen from one anther is sufficient to cover all 3 stigmatic lips then so be it, if not return to the pollen iris for another anther and repeat the cross until all 3 stigmatic lips have pollen on them.

In this garden, find that some irises more redily produce pollen than others, and some irises produce minimal to no pollen, am thinking of MARIAH in particular. Find that tall bearded varieties produce pollen more often than the standard dwarf varieties which in turn produce pollen more often than the miniature dwarf varieties. Think this is so due to the fluctuations in temperatures and/or frequency of rain during their respective bloom seasons.

The miniature dwarfs begin blooming in this southeast Michigan zone 5 garden usually beginning in mid-April. During these times there are always frost warnings and a hard frost or two. In a normal year, 2001 was an exception, there seems to be more rainfall during this time also. Still, the miniature dwarf viable pollen was negligible, EL TORITO being the exception.

The standard dwarfs begin blooming toward the end of April. Usually less rain and less liklihood of frost in a normal year, which 2001 was.

The earliest of the tall bearded varieties begin blooming the end of May, in a normal year pollen is abundant. 2001 was not an average year, more rain.

Pods have formed on these crosses: 2K1-02 Pussycat(MDB) x Plymouth Hoe(SDB), 2K1-04 Details(SDB) x Plymouth Hoe(SDB), 2K1-05 Cherokee Daybreak(SDB) x Pennines(SDB), 2K1-06 Motto(SDB) x Lime Double Dwarf(SDB), 2K1-07 Silk And Velvet(MDB) x Smart(SDB), 2K1-09 Unpretentious(SDB) x Smart, 2K1-10 unknown SDB (shipped as Jewelers Art) x Plymouth Hoe(SDB), 2K1-11 Plymouth Hoe(SDB) x Garden Whispers(SDB), 2K1-12 Sun Puppy(SDB) x Baltic Blue(SDB), 2K1-13 Cherokee Daybreak(SDB) x El Torito(MDB), 2K1-14 (99-3-1 Maya Mint MDB x Details SDB) x El Torito (MDB), 2K1-15 Little Springs Blue (SDB) x Sun Puppy (SDB), 2K1-19 Blue Moonlight x Pretty Is, 2K1-22 (99-11-1 Color Me Blue x Blue Moonlight) x Goddess, 2K1-26 Sable (TB-HIS) x Vanity, 2K1-28 Dusky Challenger x (99-10-1 Little Much x Kansas City), 2K1-29 Kelat Skies x In Reverse, 2K1-30 Better Late x Dazzling Dora, 2K1-31 Rapture In Blue x Vanity, 2K1-32 Silverado x Overseas, and 2K1-33 Color Me Blue x Better Late.

In additon bee pods have formed on El Torito, Better Late, and River Patrol. Do not know the ratio of pollen grains and number of seeds, however there is an informative website on this subject at, http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artjul99/pollen.html

Regards, Martin, southeast Michigan, zone 5
