Re: HYB: Seed Developement

From what I have been told, once an ovary accepts pollen of one variety, it does not accept pollen from another... From what I have experienced, pollinating only one lip produces seeds in all three chambers.

In other words, if you mix together 50 grains of pollen from 20 different irises each and brush all the grains onto a stigmatic lip, the ovary will only accept pollen from the very first grain that makes it and any of the other 49 grains of that one variety that may follow.

Now, whether that is true or not is beyond me.

This actually would make an excellent YOUTH PROJECT. The mixture of pollen from several drastically different types of irises onto another should give the answer we are looking for.

For instance, a variety like SKATING PARTY - a dominant white, Jessey's Song - a plicata, WELL ENDOWED - a big yellow which is a dominant pigment, and WHOLE CLOTH - a dominant amoena, onto a blue variety like BREAKERS might give you the answer. BREAKERS X SKATING PARTY should produce a bunch of whites, BREAKERS X JESSEY'S SONG should produce some rough colored blues, BREAKERS X WELL ENDOWED should produce some yellows, and BREAKERS X WHOLE CLOTH should produce some smaller amoenas.

If you end up with a mixture, some yellows and some amoenas, or some whites and some rough colored blues etc., then you'll know that the ovary accepts more than one type of pollen and that each grain produces a seed.

This is just a brain storm...I am not exactly sure those varieties mentioned would be the best to use.

And, as I said earlier, there would be more variation in
seedlings from a bee pod since the bumblebee visited so many
flowers.. There hasn't been that much variation for
me to suspect multiple fathers in a seed pod.Get more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
