Each pollen grain contains 2 male gametes. One to fertilise 1 egg, and the
other to fertilise the endosperm. (according to TWOI, but I always thought
the endosperm came exclusively from the female side??)
Each male gamete holds one 1/2 of the male parent's genetic material. The
ovule carries 1/2 of the female parents genetic material. The OVARY carries
all the ovules.
I have had bee pods on Sky Hooks which had 80 fetilised seeds. I have always
been under the impression that the visible 'grains' of pollen which you
place (or the bee puts) on the stigmatic lip, are just a cluster of hundreds
of pollen grains, in which case, one clump would contain enough pollen to
produce a good podfull of seeds.
Cheers, Jan
