I thought Spiraea were Spring flowerers? Obviously some are later flowerers.
Another good choice would have been Rock Roses (Cytisus?). Have white
flowers with yellow centres that look a bit like fried eggs. Tolerate lots
of heat and dry and flower through summer. There's also pink ones. Just
as an alternative.
The dwarf crepe myrtles are absolutely stunning. We have one that is about
3-4 foot high. Cut it back hard each winter to keep its height smaller,
then rewarded with wonderful flowers in summer.
