I have a triangle shaped plot that I'm putting irises around
the edges and thought it would be nice to have a low shrub
in the center that would have flowers throught the summer
when the irises had finished. So I searched through my
Texas gardening books and ended up with Spirea. Several
varieties of Spirea do not get more than 3 feet in height.
So I get to my favorite nursery to see what they had and the
Spirea looked terrible and they wanted $9 for ugly 1 gallon
plants. I then had to go to Lowes hardware to get some other
stuff and decided to see if they might have Spirea. They
had some but it was the variety that gets 6 foot high, so I
didn't get it. As I was leaving, I noticed that they were
getting a delivery of some plants that were a bright
rasberry color and in full bloom. He said that it is a new
hybrid Crepe Myrtle called Mandi. It was only about a foot
tall and he said it would not get too much taller. So I
bought some of them. They are very beautiful and the 3
gallon size were only $9.99.
