I'm not certain here, but I think Harald Mathes has used this method in
working with the arils and some other iris species.  He has used I. mellita
in some of his crosses as can be shown by ANACRUSIS - Dresden Gold X ((I.
iberica x I. aurantica) x I. mellita.  ANACRUSIS is a tetraploid arilbred (I
think), but I don't know if any chemical alteration was used to obtain it.
He resides in Germany.  He, along with Sam Norris, are the two folks I know
that might be able to give current and instructive information on using this
within the iris family.
