Whoops! sorry, I did not remember to put my location in my post about my
arid, sandy soil and windy area. I live in almost the exact center of
WA state. The Cascade Mountains block most of the moisture that comes
to the coast. The area here was very dry until the dam was built at
Grand Coulee and that opened the area to agriculture. We do not get
large amounts of snow in this town (Cashmere) but there is usually a
good snowfall in the mountains and that is what regenerates our
aquifer. This past winter we got very little snowfall and there will be
a water shortage which will get more severe as the summer moves on. The
forest and range fires are already beginning and the lives of two young
women and two young men were lost while fighting fire here this past
week. The wind is the greatest reason the fires are so devastating. It
dries things so much and then whips the flames along so fast when a fire
starts that it takes a very long time to contain them.
This country seems to be ideal for raising iris and roses. The heat
sometimes cooks the roses but rarely cooks the iris.
