What's been said about the freeze/thaw cycle certainly is true here in this part of zone 4, esp. when we don't get a snow cover that lasts all winter.  That's why I try to mulch in the very late fall, if possible after the ground has frozen, with a loose, non-packing mulch of some sort.  I find my old corn stalks are ideal, as they not only don't pack down but are easy to put on and take off.  You don't need a thick layer, whatever you use, just enough so that the winter sun doesn't strike rhizomes.  That way they tend to stay cold and frozen, they don't thaw and thus don't get soft from the repeat of the f/t cycle.  Works fine for me.  Also keeps the ground frozen, so there is less likelihood of the plantings of the just past summer to heave.
