Ellen,
When I lived in Kentucky, I noticed that late planted TB Irises were
especially prone to that darn freeze-thaw. One thing that made the problem
especially severe is when there was a major rainfall event that saturated the
soil, followed by a sharp turn to freezing weather. The soil would freeze
when saturated, and it would make ice crystals in the soil. Sometimes, I saw
rhizomes impaled by an ice shard. I don't recall actually losing a plant as
a result of that.
Are the wild Ditch Lilies [Hemerocallis fulva] blooming up that way?
Down here, the ones I have in the garden are about to rebloom.
