http://www.irisregister.com has one sterling virtue not to my
knowledge mentioned in past posts.
Rescuing your collection of 'orphan' slides of numbered seedlings
photographed at iris conventions.
At these meetings you WILL be seduced into snapping the shutter on
that 'to-die-for' not yet introduced seedling under number. As I do,
I make solemn vows that I 'will without fail', buy the paper R & Is
and decade Check Lists and winnow through said lists until I find
whether my last Spring's slide crop of seedling iris have been named
and placed on the market.
I didn't do it. I had at least two decades of numbered seedlings, unlabeled.
Too arduous, too time consuming, just too mind-numbing scut-work to
face plugging through countless pages of all-to-often similar
seedling numbers.
Now however, I enter a number, say for instance 5-55-1A, into the
search field of http://www.irisregister.com and voila! up pops the
information:
"SUMMIT PARTY (C. Jorgensen, R. 1987). Sdlg. 5-55-1A. TB, 30" (76
cm), M-L. S. tyrian rose (HCC 24/2) with lavender infusion at base;
F. tyrian rose (9/2) and tangerine orange blend, light lavender spot
around fire red beard; ruffled; pronounced spicy fragrance. 7-51-1:
(Apricot Glory x Marilyn C) X Symphonette. Long's Gardens 1987."
Just one of the benefits made possible by the work of the AIS
Committee for Electronic Member Services and a host of volunteers.
And for those of you who cry "Yes, but..." remember that a bit of
progress whets the appetite for 'more'. We are putting into place
electronic innovations that many AIS members did not believe would
occur in their lifetime. If the pace seems glacial, remember that the
majority of flower society volunteer workers consider those under the
age of 50 'mere children!' The old fogies are 'making it happen.'
